Since 1990, the MLK Business and Civic Organization has sponsored a children’s parade known as the Krewe of the Avenue. According to leadership in the civic organization, the krewe was established by concerned citizens who sought to bring a parade “back to the African American community, to afford area children the opportunity to be participants in the Mardi Gras festivities, rather than onlookers.” Children from 6 years old to college age participate in the “School Day Parade,” and they lead off a succession of three long parades through the MLK District.
This year’s theme is “MLK and ‘Generation Beta’ Bust’n Loose.” Expect an array of bands, dance troupes, color guards, horse groups and brass bands during what is commonly called the “Big Show.”
In 2025, the MLK Business & Civic parade was held on March 3 at 2 p.m.
