Experiencing Mardi Gras for the first time in Mobile?
Here are a few tips and tricks for making the most of your visit.
Arrive early to beat the traffic and get a prime spot on a barricade.
Streets close 30 minutes before the parade rolls. Pay attention to “No Parking” signs; you will get towed. Never jump a barricade.
Dress the part.
Mobile’s Mardi Gras colors are purple and gold (never green!). Wearing festive attire and holding hand-drawn signs will get you noticed by people riding in the parades, and get you more throws!
Bring supplies.
You may be standing a while, so bring camp chairs, a bag to collect throws in, snacks and drinks, and a trash picker to grab throws that land just out of reach.
Keep your eyes peeled.
Throws will come at you fast, and from multiple directions.
Explore Mobile Mardi Gras beyond the parades.
Learn Mardi Gras history at the Mobile Carnival Museum; visit Joe Cain’s grave at the Church Street Graveyard; eat a festive King Cake at one of our local bakeries; and shop for unique Mardi Gras attire at Toomey’s Mardi Gras.
