FAQ: Mardi Gras in Mobile

Everything you need to know about celebrating Mardi Gras in the city that was “Born to Celebrate!”

Why is Mardi Gras so significant in Mobile?

Mobile is proud to be the original birthplace of Mardi Gras in the U.S., with celebrations dating back to 1703— decades before New Orleans began its famed festivities.

How long does the Mardi Gras season last?

The Mardi Gras season typically lasts a month and a half. It starts around Epiphany (Jan. 6) and culminates on Fat Tuesday (“Mardi Gras” in French), the day before Ash Wednesday.

What’s the schedule like for parades, balls, etc.?

Expect over 40 parades rolling through downtown and surrounding areas in the final weeks before Fat Tuesday. There are also nearly 70 lavish masquerade balls hosted by mystic societies, though most are invitation-only.

Who was Joe Cain and what’s Joe Cain Day?

Joe Cain revived Mardi Gras in Mobile after the Civil War by parading through the streets in costume in 1868. Today, Joe Cain Day, celebrated on the Sunday before Fat Tuesday, honors his legacy with the lively “People’s Parade.”

What are “mystic societies”?

These are private social groups — commonly referred to as krewes— that organize parades and elegant balls. They design themed floats and costumes, and distribute “throws” (beads, MoonPies, trinkets, etc.) to eager crowds.

MoonPies — why are they so iconic here?

In Mobile, MoonPies became a Mardi Gras throw in 1956, prized by revelers far and wide.

Family-friendly or more adult-focused?

Mardi Gras in Mobile is famously family-friendly, with kid-safe parades and community events — though adult beverages are still welcome!

What kinds of “throws” should I expect?

Aside from beads and MoonPies, you might catch stuffed animals, cups, doubloons and even quirky items like artificial roses or ramen!

What about parking, safety and towing?

The Mobile Police Department strongly recommends arriving early and adhering to parking restrictions—streets near parade routes close roughly an hour before the event. Unauthorized vehicles often get towed.
